Confidence, in Progress

By

Emma Merrick

Confidence, especially self-confidence, isn’t something you simply have. It’s something you build, lose, rebuild, and learn to carry again. For me, it’s a constant work in progress. Some days I feel powerful, grounded, and unshakable. Other days? It feels like the rug’s been pulled from under me.

And that’s okay.

Confidence isn’t a permanent state, it’s something you develop. You work at it. You show up for it. And just as importantly, you give yourself grace when it slips.

You won’t feel on top of the world every day. You’re not meant to. But that doesn’t mean you’re not worthy or capable. On the days when self-belief feels distant, sometimes you have to act your way there. That’s where “fake it till you make it” can serve you, not as a lie, but as a bridge.

Put on the energy. Stand tall. Speak like you mean it. Move like you belong in the room even when your inner voice tells you otherwise. Because energy is contagious. And over time, that external confidence can start to shift the internal.

Real, lasting confidence takes deeper work. It requires self-awareness, self-talk, and compassion. But the more you practice showing up, even imperfectly, the stronger that inner belief becomes.

So be kind to yourself. Keep showing up. Keep doing the work. Confidence isn’t a destination. It’s a relationship with yourself.
